O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she received a promotion to the final 100th stage. Her performance was highly applauded by the judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and bottom 2. This shocked the judges, and they advised that the public vote for Melissa who was the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
