O'Grady is the daughter of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as an advisor to financial institutions. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at the North High School in Wheaton. Prior to moving into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. The first role she had was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She made her debut on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included programs for TV as well as independent films, among several others. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. O'Grady as the large-haired secretariat from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. She was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for her outstanding performance in an ensemble of actors in an action show.
