O'Grady is the daughter of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as an advisor to financial institutions. Her parents raised her in Wheaton (Illinois) where she completed her studies in 1981 at the North High School in Wheaton. Prior to moving into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. The first role she had was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward.
